For decades, school districts across the country have leaned toward sprawling, single-story buildings as the default design choice.

However, in today's economic and logistical climate, multi-story schools may present a smarter, more efficient approach. Some school districts have embraced this model, proving that vertical expansion can address financial, operational and educational challenges while providing a potentially more dynamic learning environment.

"Being limited in space, and not wanting to take away green space around us, building vertically made the most sense for this project," says Ryan Ruggles, district administrator of Tomorrow River School District in Amherst. "The result has been a space that truly has become a focal point for the school and community. Students love the professional and new look of the STEAM addition, and it truly has become a place for collaboration and creation as intended."
