(Appleton, Wis) – If you’ve ever watched a home renovation show on TV, you’re probably aware of how much fun designers and crews have on “demo day.” Well, teachers and administrators at Chilton Public Schools marked the end of the 2023-2024 school year and the start of the renovation and expansion of Chilton Elementary School with a “demolition ceremony” on Friday, May 17. The elementary school projects taking place this summer will be the final piece of the District’s $19.3 million referendum passed in April 2022.

“Since we already held a groundbreaking ceremony for our referendum projects in 2023, we thought we would put a new twist on celebrating the end of the school year and the start of the renovations and expansion happening this summer,” explained Susan Kaphingst, Chilton Public Schools superintendent. “Everyone in the District is excited to see the changes coming to the elementary school as the other referendum projects have already made a positive impact on staff and students.”

Prior to the referendum, the planning process began in 2021 when the District selected Hoffman Planning, Design & Construction, Inc. to perform a facility study and provide pre-referendum services. Since the passing of the referendum, Hoffman has provided design and construction management services, and the District has seen the completion of the new athletic complex, site circulation and traffic flow improvements, District-wide site and building enhancements, and a new elementary addition for the 5K program. Upcoming renovations to the elementary school include a complete reimagining of the building wing from the existing cafeteria to the new addition where 1st through 4th grade classrooms will be recreated, a special education program area, art, music, and support spaces, along with a large central skylight that will bring daylight to the interior spaces. All enhancements will be completed prior to the start of the 2024-2025 school year.

“We took a break in the projects so we wouldn’t disrupt staff and students during this school year and teachers will have plenty of time to get back into their classrooms before school starts in the fall,” said Todd Bushmaker, Hoffman project architect. “The demo event was a fun idea for a ceremony, and I’m glad the teachers could help us kick off this next phase of construction.”
