(Berlin, WI) The Berlin Area School District broke ground on a new 94,000 sq. ft. middle school. The two-story facility will be attached to the current high school and have capacity for approximately 375 students in grades 6-8.

“The district is very excited to see this project get underway,” stated school superintendent Dr. Robert Eidahl. “The new middle school will provide a proper environment for students to learn and for teachers to implement modern teaching methods.”

Hoffman Planning, Design & Construction, Inc. has been working with the district on the design of the school and will oversee the construction. “The new middle school will provide a 21st century learning environment that includes modern classrooms, math, language arts and science labs, a library, space for art and music and a gymnasium,” stated Sam Statz, Hoffman's director of construction services. “Although it will be attached to the high school, it was important for the middle school to have its own identity, which is achieved through the color of the brick exterior. The two schools will share only a few common areas like the cafeteria and some elective space, but not at the same time.”

The construction of the middle school is part of an $18.7 million referendum that was passed by the community last October. Other projects in the approved referendum include an expansion at Clay Lamberton Elementary School that will provide space for student services and programs. Renovations to Berlin High School will create a secure day-time visitor entrance, a wrestling room, and larger fitness center.

The middle school is expected to be completed by the start of the 2015-2016 school year.
