Northland Pines High School

- Education

PROFILE: This 250,000 sq. ft. high school features general and specialized classrooms, band and choir rooms, a media and technology center, a 750-seat auditorium, a 200-meter regulation indoor track, four full-sized basketball courts, additional outdoor athletic fields, and district offices.
A highlight is the new 2,600-seat field house, one of the largest in the state.

TPM: Northland Pines High School is the first LEED® gold certified public high school in the United States. Components of high efficiency low lighting, daylighting and an efficient HVAC system will provide an indoor environment that is highly conducive to learning, comfortable and energy efficient. Other sustainable design features include low VOC paints, adhesives and carpeting;
the use of materials with recycled content; and plumbing fixtures that conserve water. The high-performance facility ensures that energy-saving ideas implemented in the beginning will have a positive economic impact on the operational and maintenance costs over the life of the building. The district utilized Hoffman’s pre-referendum services and also benefited from having one single source of responsibility throughout the entire project.

The Northland Pines School District received the first annual Total Project Management: Vision Taken to the Power of Green Award in April 2006. The award recognizes organizations that have exemplified sustainability through thoughtful consideration in planning, designing and constructing an environmentally friendly, high performance, healthy facility. The award was presented by Hoffman, LLC, in collaboration with Eagle River Light & Power and Wisconsin Public Power Inc. These three organizations are also joining together to provide funding toward a solar electric system for the new high school.
