Hoffman Celebrates 125 Years of Tradition

AUGUST 1st, 2017

For everyone at and connected to Hoffman Planning, Design & Construction, Inc., 2017 will have a special feel. That’s because all throughout the year, they’ll be celebrating 125 years of Hoffman tradition.

The Hoffman family started in the construction industry in the Appleton area way back in 1892. Now, 125 years later, the Hoffman name continues to be a large part of the region’s construction landscape.

Hoffman was a family led business for four generations from 1892 until 2012. It was then that a Hoffman management group—led by Miles Girouard—formed Hoffman Planning, Design & Construction, Inc. and purchased the assets of Hoffman, LLC from Paul J. Hoffman.

“One of my career goals was to own my own firm,” said Girouard. “When I heard that Paul was interested in selling Hoffman, LLC, it seemed like a great opportunity. After discussing the possibility with family, friends, and mentors, I determined the situation was right and decided to take on the ownership challenge.”

Hoffman originally started out as a general contractor. However, under Paul’s guidance, it transformed in the late 1970s into a professional services firm offering integrated planning, design, and construction management services. Known as Total Project Management, the concept revolutionized the construction industry and positioned Hoffman as the leader in fully integrated project delivery.

Although Hoffman serves clients located throughout the country, the firm is best known for Valley Fair Mall in Appleton, Wisconsin (the nation’s first completely weather protected shopping center), and Holy Wisdom Monastery in Middleton, Wisconsin (the highest-rated LEED-New Construction v2.2 building in the United States).

Previous Hoffman owners include brothers Fred and Herman Hoffman (original owners), Fred’s two sons Paul and Fred (second generation owners), Paul’s children Gerald, Carl, and Betty (third generation owners), and Gerald’s son Paul J. Hoffman (fourth generation owner).

“It’s wonderful to be able to celebrate 125 years of Hoffman tradition and community service,” beamed Girouard. “We’re proud to have helped shape the local landscape, but we didn’t do it alone. We can’t thank our clients enough. They helped make our success a reality, and let us be a part of their successes.”
