Examining a New Kind of Learning Environment
Hoffman to share details of an innovative school with Wisconsin educators

(Appleton, WI) What develops when a group of teachers and community leaders join forces? An innovative vision for a 21st Century school located within a mixed-use facility. Hoffman Planning, Design & Construction Inc. senior educational facility designer Catherine Cruickshank and educational facility designer Robert Koehler, along with nationally recognized educational consultant James Lewicki, will examine the unique Badger Rock Middle School in their session “Project Based Learning Meets Small Neighborhood School” at the 2013 Wisconsin State Education Convention.

Hoffman’s session exploring the Madison-based school and its journey to completion takes place at the Delta Center in Milwaukee on Thursday, January 24th, from 1:45 – 2:45pm.

“The vision for this project was innovative and supported by teachers, parents and the neighborhood,” Cruickshank stated. “Our discussion of the project will analyze the vision, process, and challenges of designing Badger Rock, as well as inform convention attendees on how teachers and staff believe the school is performing as a 21st century, project-based learning environment.”

Cruickshank says the most unique aspect of the charter school is that it is housed within the Resilience Research Center, a facility that accommodates office, retail, research, urban agriculture, recreation and educational needs. “Having the school located within the research center provides its own set of benefits and challenges,” Cruickshank said. “For example, students have access to resources within the research center that aid in their learning and that are generally not available in other schools. On the flip side, we needed to address the safety challenges of placing a school in a public facility.”

Hoffman has worked with more than 55 public school districts, private schools, and charter schools throughout Wisconsin and northern Illinois and is an industry leader in sustainable design and construction.

The Wisconsin State Education Convention brings together hundreds of school leaders each year to foster effective school board practices for student success through workshops and other education programs.
