School Referendum Success!
Experts present to school administrators at annual conference

(Appleton, WI)
As many Wisconsin school districts consider facility projects and upgrades – and how to fund them - developing and implementing a strong action plan can be the difference between whether a referendum passes or fails. In the fall of 2013, the Berlin Area School District held a successful $18.7 million referendum; the details of which will be presented as a case study during the 2014 Wisconsin Association of School District Administrators (WASDA) Annual Educational Conference in May.

During the presentation, “3 to 1: The Anatomy of a Successful Referendum,” Hoffman Planning, Design & Construction, Inc. senior educational facility designer, Catherine Cruickshank along with Dr. Robert Eidahl, Berlin Area School District superintendent and Kristen Paquet, senior account executive from Leonard & Finco Public Relations, will discuss and examine the process implemented that led to three-fourths of the community voting in favor of the referendum. “We will walk through the steps that were taken to ensure community involvement in the master planning effort, and how we communicated the need, solutions, and cost impact of the project to residents,” stated Cruickshank. “Our goal is to provide valuable insight to school officials who may be considering the need for a referendum, no matter the project size or cost.”

The WASDA conference will be held May 7 – 9 at the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel in Appleton. Cruickshank, Eidahl, and Paquet’s presentation will take place on Wednesday, May 7 at 3:30 p.m.

WASDA is a professional organization primarily for those who serve as superintendents. The organization not only provides services and support for its members, but serves as an advocate for the students who attend Wisconsin public schools.
