Designed to place ACA students in real-world marketing situations, the challenge offered them the opportunity to enhance their business “soft skills”—such as communicating effectively and presenting to a group— in addition to honing their design capabilities. The challenge in 2010 asked students to develop the template for a 16-month calendar that would feature numerous Hoffman design and construction projects—all highly sustainable. Through client meetings, team collaboration, and group presentations, the students experienced many aspects of the business world and discovered the realities of working for an actual client. Listening to and understanding initial project goals, developing and explaining a concept, and accepting feedback and defending artistic choices were just some of the activities the students experienced. At the conclusion of the challenge, nine different concepts were presented to Hoffman by the student teams. Each concept was uniquely creative and thoughtful, making the final selection quite difficult. In the end, Hoffman selected the design you are currently holding. Congratulations to this year’s winning team, Parker Dougherty (senior), Mai Bao Thao (senior), and Rachelle Terrell (sophomore). Hoffman would like to send a sincere thank you to the Appleton Career Academy, design teachers Renee Ulman and Joel Elder, and all of the students who took part in the marketing challenge—we truly enjoyed working with all of you again in 2010. Hoffman is proud to partner with the Appleton Career Academy in helping prepare students for the future.
